William J. Palmer decided to write the story of his life and that of his wife Maryann because he wanted to write a memoir totally unlike any other on the crowded memoir shelves in bookstores today. It is not a conventional memoir, but rather a work of creative non-fiction. He wanted to share the power of his education, the love of his life with Maryann, the magic of words and his success in using them to write novels and screenplays, and the joy of a life-long love of reading and teaching. Oh, not to forget, his love of sports : playing them, coaching them, cheering for all of his children and grandchildren at all of their games. His goal was to write his life “like a novel” to quote Tom Wolfe’s definition of the New Journalism, define his own like as a truly literary life.

About the Author
WILLIAM J. PALMER
William J. Palmer and his wife of 63 years Maryann grew up in Akron, Ohio in the 1940s and 50s. They spent the 1960s in South Bend, Indiana, and Columbus, Ohio. He earned a BA degree from the University of Notre Dame, an MA degree from The Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. from Notre Dame as well. Working as a Registered Nurse, she supported their family during his graduate studies. He then went on to serve as a Professor of English and American Literature and Film Studies in the English Department of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Besides his academic books of literary criticism and film studies, he has published 14 novels. He and Maryann now split their time between West Lafayette, Indiana, Akron, Ohio, and Los Angeles, California. This book is as much hers as his.

A Literary Life is a Creative Non-Fiction Memoir of the growing-up in sports, the education to literature and film, the novel and screenplay writing career of William J. Palmer. That career includes the writing, publication, and movie optioning successes of his 14 novels and his books of literary criticism and film history, as well as screenwriting and theatre adventures.
But A Literary Life is also the story of the life-long love affair of him and his wife Maryann of 63 years that stretches across America, South America, and Europe. It is a love affair with the written word, for readers who carry books or Kindles everywhere. It spans 82 years of American history and 40 years of creative writing.
